CLEARCorps

CLEARCorps Northwest is a community-based affiliate program that provides services and support for families to help them protect their children from lead poisoning and other environmental health threats.

CLEARCorps was created in 1995 through a partnership between The Shriver Center at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, the National Paint and Coatings Association and The Corporation for National and Community Service’s AmeriCorps (also known as the domestic Peace Corps) Program. Community-based affiliates, like the American Lung Association® in Washington, provide services and support for families to help them protect their children from lead poisoning and other environmental health threats.

In conjunction with the American Lung Association® in Washington’s Master Home Environmentalist© Program’s (MHE©), CLEARCorps of Washington recruits and trains its members to conduct in-home air quality assessments which utilize the Home Environmental Assessment List© (HEAL©). The corps members use the HEAL to guide them through the process of identifying issues such as asthma and allergy triggers, lead, asbestos, mold, etc. that are specific to the resident’s home then recommend low-cost and no-cost solutions to identified problems. Corps members are intimately involved in all aspects of the MHE Program, training volunteers in indoor air quality issues, performing home assessments, entering resident’s information into the database, tracking volunteer activities and hours, answering environmental health questions from the public, updating fact sheets, attending health fairs and making presentations. CLEARCorps of Washington serves any and all individuals and communities with a focus on those most susceptible to environmental health risks. Members serve at the ALAW Seattle and Spokane offices and at the International District Housing Alliance of Seattle.

CLEARCorps has allowed the MHE program to expand the people it reaches exponentially. Currently there are one bi-lingual and two tri-lingual members. The greater diversity in corps members equates into a greater diversity of residents served.
