State of Tobacco Control

The American Lung Association® State of Tobacco Control report is a comprehensive state-by-state report card that evaluates federal and state tobacco control laws.

In 2007, Washington State policymakers continued to make tobacco control a health priority. Following the successes in recent years to make workplaces smoke-free and approve the increase in cigarette taxes, we are advancing the work of the American Lung Association® of Washington and other health organizations to improve lung health for all Washington residents. Despite these advances, the American Lung Association® of Washington will work to protect the smoke-free workplace law and protect funding for tobacco prevention and control programs this year.

The American Lung Association® State of Tobacco Control 2007 report is a comprehensive state-by-state report card that evaluates federal and state tobacco control laws against recognized criteria and translates each state's relative progress into a letter grade of A, B, C, D, or F. A grade of A is assigned to excellent state policy, while an F indicates inadequate state laws.

Washington State grades in the following areas:

  • Tobacco Prevention and Control Spending, Grade: B
  • Smoke-free Air, Grade: A
  • Cigarette Tax, Grade: B
  • Youth Access to Tobacco Products, Grade: A
