Five Steps to Improve Indoor Air Quality
Spring is in the air & dust is in the home. Dust in the home can contain multiple outdoor and indoor air pollutants that can negatively impact health. Even if you aren’t allergic to dust, reducing your exposure to it can improve your air quality and your health.
You can reduce the dust in your home by using tips from the Master Home Environmentalist© Program.
Five Steps to Improve Indoor Air Quality
- Remove shoes at the door. Less track-in of particles will result in cleaner air in general. Guests can wear socks or slippers to keep feet warm.
- Try damp-dusting by using a slightly wet rag to remove dirt from wipeable surfaces. You can damp-dust furniture, walls, floors, knick-knacks, cabinets, countertops, and windows.
- Ventilate the home by opening a window once a day to let air circulate.
- Try non-toxic cleaners such as baking soda for bathrooms, kitchens, and other areas of the home. Ask for the Green Cleaning Recipes brochure from the Master Home Environmentalist Program.
- Wash all bedding materials including pillowcases and blankets in hot water once a week to reduce dust mites and their matter. Do this especially for people with asthma or other breathing difficulties.
The Master Home Environmentalist© Program is a volunteer-based effort to educate residents about indoor air quality and how they can make changes toward improved health. We train individuals to do FREE home assessments using a questionnaire and a walk-through technique to identify problems in the home and to choose three Action Items for the resident to do. The volunteer follows up with the resident by phone in two weeks to see if the action items were accomplished and to provide more resource help if needed. Visits take an hour and a half on average and volunteers do not offer testing of the air or materials. It is an assessment only.
