How It Works
How the Breathe Easy Network works:
- The Washington state's Department of Ecology - Air Quality Program gathers Ambient Air Quality Data and Information from monitors throughout the state. Based in part on the Department of Ecology's monitoring information, local Washington state air quality agencies forecast today's and tomorrow's air quality for ten different areas in Washington. By 11:00 daily these forecasts are sent to the EPA AirNow website which displays today's and tomorrow's.
- Daily at 11:11a.m. PST, the American Lung Association® of Washington check's the EPA AirNow website and if any "EPA AirNow area" reports something other than a "Green/Green" forecast the American Lung Association® of Washington automatically sends an alert with "Today's" and "Tomorrow's" forecast to one or more of the three "Breathe Easy Network area(s)".
- A "Green/Green" forecast will only be sent once, following a forecast that is other than "Green/Green".
| Example: | ||
|---|---|---|
| Day | EPA Forecast Today/Tomorrow | BEN Alert Today/Tomorrow |
| Sunday | Green/Green | no alert sent |
| Monday | Green/Yellow | Green/Yellow |
| Tuesday | Orange/Yellow | Orange/Yellow |
| Wednesday | Yellow/Green | Yellow/Green |
| Thursday | Yellow/Green | Yellow/Green |
| Friday | Green/Green | Green/Green |
| Saturday | Green/Green | no alert sent |
