Lung Walk
Lung disease, including asthma, COPD, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and lung cancer, is the third leading cause of death in America. You can help us find a cure for asthma and other lung diseases by joining us for the 2010 Lung Walk.
- It is estimated that 20.3 million Americans suffer from Asthma. Of those 20.3 million approximately 5.5 million are children.
- Over the last decade, the death rate from lung disease has been growing faster than the death rate from almost any other killer.
- Since 1987, more women have been dying each year from lung cancer than from breast cancer.
- Asthma is responsible for more lost school days than any other chronic disease.
- Even more frightening is the 55% increase in the death rate from asthma over the last 20 years.
-
Over one million people in Washington struggle to breathe each day because of lung disease.
-
Each week in our region alone, two people die from asthma, 30 people die from lung cancer and more than 70 people die from COPD, emphysema and bronchitis.
- The economic cost of asthma is unbelievable - over $14 billion dollars is spent annually to keep asthma and its potentially deadly affects under control.
Register to Walk and be a Team Captain and recruit your family, friends and co-workers to walk to fight this disease and raise money to fund the programs of the American Lung Association® in Washington. The money raised will:
- Pay for needed research to find new ways of preventing, treating and someday curing lung disease. Our vision is a world free of lung disease.
- Encourage every community to respond to the asthma epidemic by creating environments where children can learn and play protected from environmental allergens and watched over by parents, educators, and medical professionals who know how to respond to an asthma attack.
- Provide critical training and resources for physicians and clinics across the state in providing up-to-date care for asthmatics.
- Create programs that provide families with the tools they need to combat asthma in the home and skilled support to obtain the best care for their children
We know what to do about lung disease: fight it head on with research, advocacy and education in all our communities across Washington. We need your help to do it.
Step-up and join us in our Fight for Air! We can help you start a healthy tradition with your family or company this spring!
